ATLAS metal D-handle of ash wood, bent handle with metal D-grip and spring ferrule, length 95 cm. The comfortable YD-grip of this handle consists of a sturdy metal bracket fitted with an ash wood grip. The handle is fitted with a spring ferrule and hole and is used together with a silage fork or potato fork with pin.

ATLAS metal D-handles are made from ash rootstocks; this is where the best wood is found. Ash wood is tough, shock-absorbing and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber under computer control. Re-drying prevents the handle from shrinking, keeping tools firmly attached to the handle.

Next the ATLAS shovel handles are bent in boiling water. This causes the wood grain or fiber in the handle to bend with it and prevents the grain from running out of the handle (a running-out grain is weaker). The bending process makes the handle extremely strong.

Finally the ATLAS handle is waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, prevents it from absorbing water or dirt and preserves the beautiful natural color. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
