Pickaxe handle or piochesteel ATLAS of ash wood, with head size 70 x 40 mm and length 90 cm. Suitable for pickaxes with an oval eye such as the 3-kilogram pickaxe (article numbers 930010 and 930011). Because of the oval shape of the handle the pickaxe always sits in the correct striking orientation. No spie or wedge is required for assembly of this tapered handle.

ATLAS pickaxe handles are made from the lower stems of ash trees; this is where the best wood is found. Ash wood is tough, shock-absorbing and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber under computer control. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink and the tool remains firmly fixed to the handle.

Subsequently the ATLAS handle is waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its attractive natural color. Waxing provides a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
