Spade handle ATLAS hickory 80 cm milled end, with T-grip, for S&J spade

Spade handle ATLAS of hickory wood, length 80 cm, fitted with a T-grip and a milled, smooth, narrow point. This handle is suitable for ATLAS gooseneck spades (item numbers 811052, 811053, 811062) and Spear & Jackson spades. This handle has the same length as the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For fitting a 50 mm rivet is recommended (item number 651620, including fitting advice).

Hickory is a heavy and hard American wood species that is even stronger than ash wood. Hickory wood is particularly tough, shock-resistant and resilient. The wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process the sawn boards are air-dried. During the second process the hickory wood is redried in a climate chamber under computer control. By redrying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.

Next the ATLAS handle is waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its beautiful natural color. Waxing provides a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
