ATLAS spade handle made of ash wood, 85 cm in length, equipped with a strong through-mount T-grip and a smooth, narrow point, suitable, among other things, for a Spear & Jackson spade with a shoulder. This handle is 5 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly, a 50 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651620, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstock, which contains the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant, and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process, the ash wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. Because of the re-drying, the handle does not shrink, tools stay firmly attached to the handle, and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
The ATLAS handles are then waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its beautiful light color. The waxing ensures a longer lifespan and a pleasantly smooth handle, which helps prevent blisters. In addition, waxing handles with a plant-based wax is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
