ATLAS spade handle of ash wood, length 75 cm, equipped with a strong through-mount T-grip and a milled end, smooth, narrow tip, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 5 cm shorter than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. A 40 mm rivet is recommended for mounting (article number 651590, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber controlled by computer. By re-drying the handle does not shrink, tools stay firmly attached to the handle and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its beautiful natural color. The waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasantly smooth handle, which prevents blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
