ATLAS spade handle of ash wood, length 90 cm, fitted with a strong through-mount T-grip and a milled, smooth, narrow tip, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 10 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For mounting a 40 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651590, including mounting advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. By re-drying the handle does not shrink, tools remain firmly attached to the handle and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
Subsequently the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its attractive natural colour. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, which helps prevent blisters. In addition, vegetable waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured completely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
