ATLAS spade handle made of ash wood, length 75 cm, fitted with a T-grip and a milled end, smooth, narrow point, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 5 cm shorter than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly a 40 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651590, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process the sawn ash planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber under computer control. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.
Subsequently the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba wax. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its beautiful natural light colour. The waxing provides a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, the plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured in the Netherlands in an entirely energy-neutral process and are available in various lengths and versions.
