Spade handle ATLAS of ash wood in length 95 cm, equipped with a strong through-mount T-grip and a smooth, narrow point, among others suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade with lip. This handle is 15 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly a 50 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651620, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstocks; this is where the best wood is found. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash boards are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber controlled by computer. By re-drying the handle does not shrink, the tool stays firmly attached to the handle and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
Subsequently the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its attractive natural colour. The waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than the use of varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured entirely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
