ATLAS fork handles are made from ash wood rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-absorbing, and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, sawn ash wood planks are air-dried. During the second process, the ash wood is computer-controlled redried in a climate chamber. Because of the redrying, the handle does not shrink, the tool stays firmly fixed to the handle, and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or staples.
Next, the ATLAS fork handles are bent in boiling water. This causes the wood grain or fiber in the handle to follow the bend, preventing the grain from running out of the handle (a runout grain is weaker). The bending process makes the handle extremely strong.
Finally, the ATLAS handle is waxed with the plant-based Carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its beautiful natural color. Waxing ensures a longer service life and a pleasantly smooth handle, helping prevent blisters. In addition, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
