Spade handle ATLAS made of hickory wood, length 85 cm, equipped with a T-grip and a milled end with a smooth, narrow tip. This handle is suitable for ATLAS gooseneck spades (article numbers 811052, 811053, 811062) and Spear & Jackson spades. This handle is 5 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly a 50 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651620, including assembly advice).
Hickory is a heavy and hard American wood species that is even stronger than ash wood. Hickory wood is exceptionally tough, shock-resistant and resilient. The wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process the sawn boards are air-dried. During the second process the hickory wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.
Subsequently the ATLAS handle is waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, prevents it from absorbing water or dirt and preserves the attractive natural colour. Waxing ensures a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, which prevents blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than the use of varnish or paraffin.
