ATLAS spade handle made of ash wood, length 95 cm, equipped with a strong through-mount T-grip and a milled end with a smooth, narrow tip, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 15 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For mounting, a 40 mm rivet is recommended (item number 651590, including mounting advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash wood rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process the sawn ash wood planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink, tools remain firmly attached to the handle and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its attractive natural color. Waxing provides a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, which prevents blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
