Spade handle ATLAS of ash wood, length 70 cm, provided with a T-grip and a milled end with a smooth, narrow point, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 10 cm shorter than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For mounting a 40 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651590, including mounting advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash wood planks are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber under computer control. By re-drying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its attractive pale color. Waxing provides a longer lifespan and a pleasant smooth handle, thereby preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than the use of varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured entirely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
