ATLAS spade handle of ash wood, length 75 cm, fitted with a T-grip and a smooth, narrow tip, among others suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade with a lip. This handle is 5 cm shorter than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For mounting, a 50 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651620, including mounting advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash wood rootstocks, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its attractive natural colour. The waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured entirely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and variants.
