ATLAS ash wood spade handle, 75 cm long, equipped with a T-grip and a smooth, narrow point, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade with a lipped blade, among other uses. This handle is 5 cm shorter than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly, a 50 mm rivet is recommended (item number 651620, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash wood rootstock, which contains the best wood. Ash wood is tough, impact-resistant, and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process, the ash wood is computer-controlled and redried in a climate chamber. By redrying, the handle does not shrink and tools stay firmly attached to the handle.
The ATLAS handles are then waxed with plant-based carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, prevents it from absorbing water or dirt, and helps it retain its attractive light color. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasantly smooth handle, helping prevent blisters. In addition, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured entirely carbon-neutrally in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
