Spade handle ATLAS of ash wood, 80 cm long, fitted with a strong through-mount T-grip and a milled, smooth, narrow end, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle has the same length as the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For mounting a 40 mm rivet is recommended (article number 651590, including mounting advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash wood rootstocks; this is where the best wood is found. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber under computer control. Because of the re-drying the handle does not shrink, tools remain firmly attached to the handle and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains its attractive natural color. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, which prevents blisters. Moreover, waxing handles with plant-based wax is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured entirely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
