ATLAS spade handle of ash wood, 85 cm long, fitted with a T-grip and a milled, smooth, narrow point, suitable for a Spear & Jackson spade or ATLAS gooseneck spade. This handle is 5 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly a 40 mm rivet is recommended (item number 651590, including assembly advice).
ATLAS spade handles are made from ash wood rootstocks; these contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-resistant and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process the ash wood is re-dried in a climate chamber controlled by computer. By re-drying the handle does not shrink and tools remain firmly attached to the handle.
Next the ATLAS handles are waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its attractive natural light colour. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasant smooth handle, preventing blisters. Moreover, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
ATLAS spade handles are manufactured completely energy-neutral in the Netherlands and are available in various lengths and versions.
